Does everyone use ASL? Are there different types of sign language?

A common misconception is that sign language is universal, when in fact it varies by country, just as spoken languages do. ASL is one of many sign languages used throughout the world. ASL is unique to the United States and Canada. Mexico uses Mexican Sign Language, the UK uses British Sign Language, etc. When deaf people from other countries need an interpreter and are not fluent in ASL, this is the optimal time to use a deaf interpreter.
